1986-9#Become a Dispatch Instructor

In April, Mako's health did not improve.
One day,Mako received a phone call from a woman.
"I was referred to you by the principal of the Conservatory of Music, and I was wondering if you could watch my pupils while I am away."
Mako was to meet the woman,Kathy, at the Conservatory.  

"I teach piano to kids, mostly in public elementary schools after school.
Do you drive? If you don't, I think traffic can be a bit of a challenge.
The locations of the schools vary, and the kids are from low-income neighborhood sometimes as many as 20 pupils per class.They do not all have pianos and practice on paper pianos."

She seemed kind and generous.
That's probably why such work is still going on,Mako thought.

Another reason Mako accepted the job is because it paid $20 an hour.
But it was a job as an itinerant teacher from a music school, going to various schools after school to teach piano to 10 to 20 children in an hour.

There was still snow on the ground, and in some cases there were blizzards.
However, Mako enjoyed visiting schools in Toronto and neighboring cities and interacting with the children.
Violence may be commonplace in their homes, and when teaching piano, the sound of slaps from waiting children could be heard incessantly.

Suddenly one day, a mother who was free from obstinacy came in with a young rockabilly-looking man who looked like her child's father-in-law and said,
"I want to take a picture with my oriental piano teacher. "
So the four, parents, child and Mako lined up in front of the piano and snapped a few flashes.
There were no children's piano chairs there.
Mako had stacked five steel chairs at a child's height, which was hilarious, and Mako's sure her picture would have been full of laughter.

After dealing with a large number of students, Mako figured out how to do it.
First, she decided to have the kids be quiet at the beginning of the lesson and listen to what the teacher had to say.
Then she began by asking,
"Isn't walking to school the same as looking at sheet music and playing the piano?
Who comes to school every day and walks exploring road on their toes?
You would look for some landmarks and learn your way around them, right?
If you mark a post, do you use your hands and feet to explore the post to see its location?
You won't get to school doing that, will you?
Just like that, you ca't get to the end of a song by just exploring the sound."

Speaking out loud, Mako used her body to walk through everyone's piano in front of 20 children, showing them how the piano looks in front of them.
As a result, 20 children began to listen quietly to Mako's story.
"Who comes to school like this day after day?
Know where everything is and walk straight on the keys with your fingers normally,"
Mako further informed.
"Listen carefully when your friend is playing and don't repeat what he or she has failed to do."

The entire class became quiet and eager to watch others' lessons.
At the piano, everyone is staring at the sheet music.
"Here and here are the same, so just do the same movement.
Don't try to play them one by one."
"If someone makes mistakes, think about why he or she makes mistakes."
"When it's your turn, don't do the same thing."

The children seemed to enjoy the lessons.
In addition, the children no longer complain in the same way as adults, saying,
"It's not fair that his lessons are so long and mine are so short,"
or
"You only pay attention to that child."

Mako was not feeling well and at the end of the one-hour lesson, she could not remember where she had put her hat or scarf.
Was it prejudice against the poor neighborhood that there were no hats or other items where she often put them when she left?
Even if it wasn't, things were often lost in Toronto.

For a very short time, the students she taught were children from minimum- wage families who practiced piano on paper keys, but they may have felt
something when they saw Mako struggling.

When Mako played a piece at the end of the lesson, the children and adults
who came to pick up their children after work would all say,
"It's beautiful," their eyes sparkling with joy.

After a few weeks, Mako received a phone call from Kathy who had finished her vacation.
"The kids are wonderful. What kind of magic did you do with them?"

Thinking about how to practice something you can't do, but will someday be able to do, is useful even when you are full of setbacks.

Henry Ford put it this way.
"When everything seems to be going against you,
remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it."

Mako, who was not good at interpersonal relationships, was not good at dealing with people.
Still, going to faraway places by subway or bus was also a comfort to Mako, who was living on her own.
Mako was thrilled as she rode the transit system into an unfamiliar elementary school.
Occasionally , Mako would be greeted kindly by the school teachers.

On the other hand, there were times when the teachers responded, "This is my territory," and Mako was struck by how different people are.

Due to her health, Mako was not able to give lessons until the end of the year as a dispatched instructor, but it was enough of a memory of the early spring of 1986.

# Accompanist Bank
The Conservatory decided to create a new "Accompanist Bank" to register accompanists and meet the demand.
Mako auditioned for the bank at Marina's suggestion.
Later, Mako was told that she had passed the audition and received a compliment from the principal.

However, Mako's physical strength had bottomed out, and she was unable togo to her piano lessons after Marina watched her accompany Kreutzl on March 9.

A difficult period for Mako began.
Her whole body was thrown into a frenzy by her extremely fatigued nerves, and her condition remained the same.
From morning to night, Mako spent her time idly.

It had been a long time since Mako had been away from cooking. She was annoyed at having to shop for ingredients, and at having to share the kitchen with other people.
Still, even if she slept all day, she had to eat something, and it was hard to live a life where she only went out to eat.

While waiting for her meal to be served in the cafeteria, Mako was always reminded of her elementary school days.
It was when Mako took a leave of absence from school and went to therapy from her brother's boarding house in Mitaka, Tokyo.
First of all, Mako was neurotic enough because of the sadness of being out of school.
It was not common to see children eating out alone in any diner. Mako had to look at her loneliness in the crowd of the big city.

When eating at a buckwheat noodle restaurant somewhere, Mako placed her handbag on the table and barely ate her meal, looking at the bulge in her wallet, out of fear that she would not be able to pay the bill without her wallet.
Mako remembered her childhood, when she had to live in a heavy and difficult life every day, and she couldn't help but think that her life now was much better than that.
For Mako, such a life of music brought her as much joy as a crocus blooming healthily in the Toronto snow.

Still, Mako now had a job playing in an ensemble with people studying flute and cello. Most of them were up to grade 10, so Mako didn't have to practice much.
But when she traveled far away to accompany them, Mako wondered if she would be able to make a living from this job in the future. When she combined the time spent commuting and waiting, she felt that accompaniment would not be a viable job.

# Kreutzer Sonata

The Kreutzer Sonata is Mako's favorite violin sonata.
The job to play the piano accompaniment for it came.
Mako reads the score with delight.
This sonata is so thrilling that she does not need any other Beethoven violin sonatas if she only has this sonata.

The first movement is fast-paced and brilliant.
It requires the kind of quickness and organization that housework demands. Beethoven seems to have said,
"If you can't do the housework, you can't do anything else."

The second movement, which follows, is like a varied domestic life, full of relaxation and thoughtfulness, never boring.
Every device supports the bright lyricism.
Beethoven must have dreamed of such a married life.

Mako thinks that German-born violinist Coria Brach would have loved this sonata deeply. He later arranged this violin sonata for strings and played it with friends.
Their performance seems to represent the future of humanity, like Edgar Cayce's prophecy.

Cayce says,
"The times will go on and all the great cities of the world will sink to the bottom of the sea."

Marina praised Mako's accompaniment to the Kreutzer Sonata, calling it "Exceptionally well done," but in the end, Mako never matched the client.

Mako's fingers were on the verge of floating, as if gravity had changed and she had played a Goldberg Variation in the past.
It was a foreshadowing of physical death.

The moment Mako reached her room, climbing the stairs of the boarding house, Mako's connection with all pianos was severed.

# Kiwanis Competition Production
The competition began and Mako spent many days running from place to
place.
In the vocal division of this competition, Mako received the first prize given to the accompanist of a Mozart song.
A few days later at the Conservatory, Mako was in a good mood when her voice teachers who were present at the competition complimented her on her "beautiful Mozart".

However, there was a mishap.
The first was that Mako failed to play a piece she was suddenly asked to accompany.

The second was that she had dressed incorrectly for a gala concert of prize
winners and had gotten cold while waiting for her turn.
Mako thought, "I should have worn underwear that clung more closely to my skin," but it was too late.

In Japanese, the month of February is called "Kisaragi" because it is cold and people wear kimonos in layers.
At last, what she had feared had happened. Fear made Mako's muscles cramp and her body stiffen.
After the concerts Mako told Marina about this incident.

Mako lost track of what was right and what was wrong.
Is it better to be honest or dishonest?
Must we consider the time and place for the same honesty?
Depending on who you are dealing with, honesty works better or worse.

#Toward the Kiwanis Competition
As the year changed, Mako was asked by various people to accompany them for the Kiwanis Competition.
The Kiwanis Competition is held every February at churches and other locations in Toronto. There are piano, voice, violin, cello, and ensemble categories. Only vocal music is for adults, but the others are open to children and teenagers.
It is just like a caravan, a diverse and wide-ranging civic music festival.

One day Mako went to a lesson, and Marina had a grim look on her face.
”I’ve been meaning to tell you this for a while, but why do you tell people that you're not feeling well? If you have rheumatism, why don't you just take a
pill? You are a lively person with one full of genie in you."

Mako replied,
"I don't know the real cause of my pain. But I'm always worried
about it because my muscles suddenly cramp up for various reasons."

Last week, Mako was invited to the home of a girl prodigy who was Marina's piano pupil, but who also played several other instruments with great skill.
Someone had recommended Mako as an accompanist.
The house had a Bösendorfer piano.
Mako told the family about her physical condition, but a few days later received a phone call refusing to accompany her.

Mako did not realize that her words were the cause of the refusal, but the father of the child told Marina.
Marina did not say anything specific, but Mako supposed that for an apprentice to be turned down for a job was, in a sense, to lose Marina's own position.
Perhaps Mako was too relieved to talk about her body, some of whom asked her to accompany them, saying that they would still be fine with it.
