#The Royal Conservatory of Music

My school is in the central part of Toronto. It is one minute on foot from the St. George subway station. When Gould attended the Conservatory it was stationed on College Street. However, that building was rebuilt into a glass commercial building.
Presently, the Conservatory is in an old building made of orange brick and entwined with ivy. It stretches from the percussion room two floors under the ground up to the fourth floor above the ground.

The elevator is ridiculously huge. It is big enough to fit a whole grand piano in it. Even when there is only one person inside it crawls as slowly as if it were transporting a grand piano. I rarely came across anyone in that elevator, probably because the stairs were quicker. It felt awkward riding in it alone.
Diary Entry 1982-39 The Royal Conservatory of Music_b0071688_23122398.jpg

In front of the elevator, there is a connecting corridor leading to the east wing. On the east side, there are students’ lockers. There is a staircase next to the central rooms and the rooms on the east side. On the north side of the east staircase, there was a toilet that was locked and intended for professors’ use only. Therefore, a student could only very rarely bump into a professor in the toilet.

Let’s climb up the front staircase. There is a painting on the ceiling of the grand main entrance. I hadn’t noticed this painting for a long time. On the left side of the entrance is an office and on the right is the finance and accounting service. At the end of the grand entrance hallway is the concert hall.

A great characteristic of this building was its smell.
The great pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli had a very sensitive sense of smell and he says he remembered music halls where he performed by their smell. I, too, cannot forget the smell of the conservatory. I wonder if it still smells the same.
Like smelling the vast expanse of the ocean, I seek that familiar smell. It was a strong and steady smell, without change in the blend of its fragrance ingredients. It was the same in the spring and the summer, in the autumn and the winter. For me, it served as a kind of aromatherapy at the time. I think there was a smell of wax in the blend as well.

「さとうきび畑」と父子の関係_b0071688_17494031.jpg

Diary Entry 1982-38 The Christmas Parade_b0071688_16540545.jpg

#The Christmas Parade

The Christmas Parade in Toronto takes place at the very beginning of November. I watched it from the roof of the tall building of the Conservatory. Having a parade during this period should be avoided if possible if heavy snow falls in Toronto in the first week of November.
I knew the Americans love parades, but it seems that Canadians are the same in that respect.

I heard that some years later there was a parade under the name of the “Parade of the Gould’s Children”. I wonder what that parade looked like.
I heard that, after his death, the Canadians started considering Gould as their national hero more and more.

#The Movie Theater

After the harmony lesson, I went to see a movie about Gould in the St. Lawrence Theatre together with Professor Keats, his friend and my classmate Christina. In the subway, Professor Keats talked about being completely fascinated by the beauty of Gould’s Bach Concerto.

There was a huge crowd around the theatre. People swarmed the place because the entrance was free. For a while, we stood aside and observed the situation.
When the door opened a theatre attendant came out and said, “It is a total confusion inside at the moment. After we count the number of people we will inform you how many more of you can enter. Please wait for a while.”

Professor Keats said, “There is no way we can enter, and we have school tomorrow, so I suggest we go back.”
At that moment, I saw Gould smiling at me from the clear night sky, “Don’t worry, Mako. You will enter.”
After a while, the doors of the theatre opened again.
“We can accept 17 more persons. Please, only 17 of you enter the hall.”
Everyone rushed towards the entrance with a lot of pushing and shoving. The crowd swallowed me and I suddenly found myself inside. From above my head, I heard a voice counting the number of people getting in.
The attendants were bringing additional, simple chairs. At the moment when I thought about taking one of the chairs I heard Gould’s voice again, “I have a seat for you as well.”
“No way, in this crowd!” I thought, but there really was a seat. I heard usherette’s saying, “This way please.” There was a soft red theatre chair in front of me. From that chair, I enjoyed three films about Gould.

My three companions who hadn’t managed to enter decided to go home. Professor Keats asked about me when he noticed my absence, “Where is Mako?”
The professor was amazed when Christina who saw me entering said that I managed to get in.

*Zehn Lieder op.11 10
 * Sieben Lieder op.14 7

*Klavier quintett

Drei Klavierstücke
